Three people died and 10 others sustained serious injuries after a vehicle carrying 12 passengers veered off the Rusape-Nyanga Road and overturned Sunday.

The accident occurred at the 89-kilometer mark along the road on Nov. 1 as the Nissan Vanette traveled toward Nyanga, according to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road, overturned once and landed on its side.

One person died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries after arriving at Nyanga District Hospital.

The remaining 10 occupants, including the driver, sustained serious injuries and received medical attention at the same hospital.

In a statement, police confirmed the circumstances surrounding the accident.

"A motorist driving a Nissan Vanette vehicle carrying 12 passengers towards Nyanga allegedly lost control of the vehicle," police said.

The ZRP said authorities transported the bodies of the three victims to Nyanga District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

The accident comes amid growing concerns over road safety in Zimbabwe, where traffic crashes continue to claim thousands of lives annually.

According to the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ), the country recorded 52,288 road traffic accidents in 2024.

These accidents claimed 2,015 lives and left 10,074 people injured.

The figures translate to an average of more than five road deaths daily, highlighting the continuing threat that traffic accidents pose to motorists and passengers across the country.
